Reinventing the Wheel
Designer/silkscreen artist Julie Plum finds success with a circle.

EAST LOS ANGELES, CA- A shirt with a circle or a horizontal line on it is a very basic concept. But it is these simple creations that are now available in over 40 high-end boutiques across the western United States, a handful of shops across the east coast, and most recently, across the sea in dozens of shops in New Zealand with the potential expansion to Australian markets, thanks to Collections Marketing, Ltd. (It is like the Emperor's new clothes without an outspoken child anywhere in sight!)

It has been less than a year since Julie Plum founded Klaklo Kouture and introduced her line of dada tops to the masses. Yet what started with a simple idea of placing minimalist geometric shapes and illogical proclamations on t-shirts has now expanded to the full manufacturing of original patterns & garments on hand picked fabrics created to match the hand printed art. Her latest creations feature nonsensical concepts such as extra long sleeves that snap together, snap-on covers that disclose nothing at all when removed, detachable sleeves, and other fashion absurdities on conservative, well crafted tops.

Silkscreening is an art form. Klaklo prides itself in that all of the art is hand printed by the designer herself. It was the medium of choice of Andy Warhol and many fine artists today. However, it has been underappreciated and undermined in the fashion world. It may mostly be due to a market saturated by trendy pink baby-t's with annoying silkscreened statements such as, "Heiress," "Princess," and "Pornstar" but nevertheless, Klaklo intends to elevate the medium with the use of intriguing color pallets, texturized printed patterns, glow-in-the-dark inks, ultra-subtle transparent & reflective inks, variable ink densities, squint-inducing color-on-color combinations, and images that are strategically placed between fabric layers prior to sewing so that they are never actually seen!

As for the future, Klaklo Kouture plans to expand from upper body wear to ALL body wear with original dresses, jackets, skirts, and more. Klaklo also plans to collaborate with prominent visual and musical artists to bring their original art to the ultimate art canvas: The klothing that you wear.
