Katy Crowe is a painter whose work has developed within the confines of the abstract ouvre. She attended the Art Students League in NYC, the Santa Barbara Art Institute where she received her BFA and the Maryland Institute/College of Art where she received her MFA. After finishing school in Baltimore, she travelled to Europe where she spent the better part of a year in Paris, France, painting. There she met a number of reknown artists, including Joan Mitchell and Frederk Thursz, who influenced her painting as well as her thinking about art. In Crowe's current paintings, she has employed a loose weave of repeat forms which allow for the investigation of color in a fresh way for her, and gives the work an organic atmosphere new to her work. The play between forms and color create movement. While her visual language is based in the historical progression of abstraction (A/E, Geometric Minimalism) with intellectual intent, these paintings develop intuitively which allows for an emotional quality as well as an immediacy in the work. Because Crowe's painting process involves the layering of color, the images adapted readily to the process of silkscreen. The working title Tree Suite, came from a video Crowe was working on prior to the printing project. As a result, the titles of the individual prints came form the LIve Oaks indigenous to Southern California; Quercus A. (Agrifolia, coast live oak), Quercus C. (Chrysolepis, canyon live oak), Quercus E. (Engelmannii, mesa oak). We are offering these prints at a special prince until October 1, 2000. TREE SUITE - a suite of three prints, unframed, $1,500.00 (List $1,700.00) Individual prints, Quercus A., Quercus C., or Quercus E., unframed, $525.00 (List $600.00).
